Day 21

Breakfast at the Raven did not disappoint, it was a large collection of meats, cheeses, fruits, juices and home baked breads. Christine the owner did all the baking and cooking; gourmet breakfast does not describe this feast. Debbie tried to figure out a way to return for dinner this afternoon, after all its only 158 miles from Haines, and it would be worth every mile. We leave for Haines around 8:30 for an early arrival so we can tour the town some before dinner. On the way we travel up a mountain pass, where the temperature drops in the low 30’s, after Debbie and I engage in our obligatory snow fight we continue on to Haines. Haines like Homer is a small coastal town surrounded by mountains and situated on the Inside Passage, they do get their share of the cruise ship tourist trade, but is does still have the small town feel. The B&B we had planned to stay at had suffered recent snow damage, most of the main building had collapsed. It seems as if they have gotten over 40’ of snow this year. At the recommendations of several local people we found rooms at another B&B called the Lynn View Lodge overlooking the water. The lodge is very nice, and the rooms are large. Suzy makes us feel right at home and even has made some sweet tea, our first in over 2 weeks. She also has the best Butter Ale I have ever tasted, thanks for everything Suzy and good luck, we know you will do fantastic. There is a dead moose that has washed up on the shore, looks as if it was the victim of a Grizzly and there have been Golden and Bald Eagles feeding there. We plan on eating fresh seafood tonight, more halibut and salmon at a local spot that Suzy has told us about. Hopefully we can get to bed early and get some sleep before we have to be at the Alaska Marine terminal to catch our 3:30 AM ferry to Skagway and our last night in Alaska before heading back down the Alaskan Highway.

Total Miles To Date: 7972
Lynn View Lodge - A+
Sweet Tea by Suzy: A++++
