We awoke to snow and ice on the suburban and started our way north from Dawson Creek, British Columbia to Watson Lake, Yukon Territory. We headed to mile post “0” of the Alaskan Highway to begin today’s 620 mile drive. The drive is not as bad as expected, some gravel sections and frost heaves, but we are able to make good time. The scenery is unbelievable, the magnitude cannot be expressed. The ALCAN is a lonesome drive and we seldom see another vehicle. The one thing that is plentiful is the wildlife. We saw a variety, including bears, deer, elk, moose, caribou, buffalo, coyotes and many others. This is an unbelievable drive and is well worth the trip so far. One of the things we have to get used to is the daylight. It was daylight when we got to Dawson Creek last night at 10:30 and was light again at 4:00 AM. It is now 11:20 PM in the Yukon and it is still light outside. Janice remarked that it was the first time she had worn sunglasses at 10:00 PM. The people here at the Air Force Lodge in Watson Lake are very friendly and made us feel at home. When we walked in this afternoon we met a man from Yulee of all places. They had been traveling for a month and had just made it here. They too are on their way to Alaska. We leave in the morning heading for Dawson City in the Klondike, our last night in Canada before reaching Fairbanks, Alaska. We are still having a laugh a minute and enjoying each other’s company. Everyone is still behaving even though we left the “Turtle” in Billings. We have now decided to use the survivor method and just vote someone out of the suburban if things get too bad. More to follow….
